In the book by Pete Greig, “How to Pray: a Simple Guide for Normal People”, he describes the importance of Intercessory prayer as minding the gap between Heaven and Earth. What a powerful calling! I can‘t say that this always comes naturally for me, in fact it’s much easier for me to focus my prayers on my concerns, my wants. As I lean into this more, I am seeing that not only is this a way for me to love others, but interceding is packed with such power. Our Father, is always waiting for us to call to him in prayer. He wants us to humble ourselves before Him - “thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven’.
I love the story of Moses interceding for Joshua as he fights the Amalekites (Exodus 17: 11-13). As long as Moses prayed with his arms raised to Heaven, the Israelites were winning. When his arms came down, they started losing the battle. I love this part- then Aaron and Hur came along Moses and held his arms up! The Lord heard their prayers and the Israelites were triumphant. The Lord fights our battles! What a relief!
When we intercede for others, we are falling instep with our Lord Jesus Christ- the great Interceder. The writer of Hebrews says “He always lives to intercede for them” (Heb 7:25). And the Spirit intercedes for us in wordless groans in our times of weakness (R0m 8:26-27). How amazing- He is praying for you and me right now!
